The May Island Disaster
The Battle of the Isle of May is now known as one of the most disastrous military disasters of all time! The public didn’t know about it until after everyone was dead. Are you aware there were no hostile ships involved in the incident? Three submarines and one battlecruiser were all that was involved. These British Royal Navy K class submarines collided on January 13, 1918 in the middle the night, after they suddenly changed direction while traveling to Scapa Flow, Scotland.
The ships changed directions after they realized that they were heading towards the minesweepers but crashed into the other ships. The two submarines went down in a disastrous way. All of the K4 crew were killed, and 51 out of 59 K17 crew were also killed. Now, the submarines are 100 meters apart and 50 meters below sea level.
