Hara Submarine Base
This site was once a busy military center of the Soviet Union for four decades. Hara’s submarine base was abandoned and vandalized since then. Rusted metal structures and a lighthouse are among the ruins that have been left behind by outside forces. The Russian army built it in the 1960s, and used it as a base of operations during the Soviet occupation.
If you looked at it now, you would never guess that hundreds of soldiers lived here. The base was built with stones taken from nearby towns. In 1989, after suffering under the Soviets’ rule, the Estonians joined with their neighbors and demolished the base. The base attracted world attention and forced the Soviets after the fall of the USSR to leave.
