Johnston atoll
Johnston Atoll, which was originally the Army’s playground for 70 years, is now operated by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. It was located in the Pacific Ocean and one of the world’s most remote bases. In the 1930s, this bird sanctuary became a military site. The site was intended to be used for aircraft repair, fueling, and maintenance.
In the 1940s, the station was a nuclear test facility. At its height, it housed and employed 1,300 people. Johnston Atoll, as some of you know, is known for its storage and disposal of Agent Orange. . In the 1960s, radioactive and nuclear tests caused oil spills and chemical releases in the surrounding area. Cleaning up the spills is still ongoing.
