This is not the first time.
Jack’s farm had some cats and dogs that would protect the livestock and catch vermin. But this didn’t make his defenses infallible. Coyotes and foxes had been through the farm before, as well as a few stray dogs.
The animals always caused havoc and disrupted the farm for several days. Jack was horrified to hear that another predator had broken in.

Jack looked back before he reached the chicken coop. Mary and Giselle were pressed up against the kitchen window, with their worried, tiny faces. His stomach tightened as he gave a small wave.
Jack noticed that the chickens were not where they should be when he opened the door of the chicken coop. He saw feather clumps on the floor.
He muttered “No, no” with a sinking heart.
