34. Girls Get What they Want
Jack’s words lit up the girls, despite his scowling frown. Mary told him that he was always too soft but he could not help himself. After all, these were his daughters.
Would he be different if he had been born a boy? Jack often asked himself that question. It was “probably” but the time had passed.
Jack was hoping that he hadn’t given in to his children’s demands too often.
35. What Kids Don’t know
Children are very optimistic and want to see the best in every situation. Adults are more jaded. Jack was aware of what his daughters were not, and he didn’t want to pay the price.
He did not want his children to associate animals with a bad childhood memory, because that could hurt them in future.
Jack was extremely cautious about this risk, and with good reason.
