28. Jack Feels Foolish
Jack thought, “I feel stupid.
All this happened while he was sleeping. He felt that he had been a bad farmer. His father and grandfather would not have been proud. He couldn’t believe how quickly everything had changed.
Jack thoughtI wish I hadn’t heard that noise. As soon as the wail pierced the darkness, the things at the farm began to get stranger.
29. The Shock of his Life
Jack always thought the phrase “the shock of your lifetime” was silly. If you plan well and are vigilant, you won’t experience any “shocks”.
He laughed sardonically at his naivety.
This was the biggest shock of his entire life. Jack said he would not listen to any farmer who looked at his cornfield.
