He heard the arrival of the fire department. The men had obviously done this work more often because they did not even recognize Dave. Once they had the right posture, and applied some pressure, the men were able to quickly break the rust. Dave was amazed at how quickly and efficiently the firemen used their tools to open the cover. They knew what they were doing and had a plan.
Each man knew his role, and executed it with precision. The cover was held in place by one man while the two others used their tools and broke the rust to lift it. The men worked together to lift the cover and move it to one side. They then used a stepladder to descend into the sewer, and assess the situation. Dave was impressed by how fast and efficiently the firemen had worked and was grateful for their assistance. Dave was grateful that the firefighters had the tools and knowledge necessary to do the job.
