Each ship has a unique story. It is only natural to become more curious if you find an abandoned sub. These vehicles have stories that you will never believe. It is almost a miracle that these machines were created, but you will not believe what they have gone through.
Some were found near the coasts while others were found in dark, eerie tunnels. They were used for covert missions during World War II, and even the Cold War. Keep reading if you like the story!
Soviet naval base
Simushir Island, located 250 miles off of the coast of Japan, is part of an island chain created by volcanic activity. This deserted island looks like the hideout of a villain if you don’t look closely. It is covered in rusting ruins. It wasn’t always like this. In the 1970s, the Soviet Union used its northern part as a base for their submarines after crossing the island with a canal that led to Broutona Bay.
A city was built around this base which, at the time, housed 3,000 people. Three docks were built for submarines. One of them is still intact. The ships were used for the planting of explosives and mines throughout northern Japan. The base was also used as a radar station at one time. The only remnants of the site today are the murals, maps, signs and submarines.
