The Corps removed over 3,000 acres from the reservoir of the dam, unaware that they would create a local attraction some 70 years later, the tree stump gardens.

Residents protested against the destruction of their settlement but without success. New Detroit was still alive, despite its grim appearance. By then, it was powered by automobiles, not horse-drawn carriages.
Ghost Town
Residents who had grown to love their little part of the world moved up the top of a flat plateau, about a mile away. It must have been eerie to see the water transform their old settlement, including the wagon, into a ghost city!

The history of New Detroit has been brought to light thanks to the lake bed exploration by Deputy Dave. This neat wagon that experts believed had never been exposed before the 2015 drought sparked an interest from a whole area in its colourful history!
